Cruising Alaska: Aboard the Disney Wonder

We embark on a magical journey aboard the Disney Wonder to experience the breathtaking beauty of Alaska. There’s no place quite like Alaska to combine the whimsical charm of Disney with the rugged majesty of nature. Imagine salmon and Cinderella, Goofy and grizzlies, all in one adventure. We will chase waterfalls, reach travel milestones, and share tips to make the most of your Disney Alaska cruise.

Setting Foot in His 50th State

This cruise is particularly special for Jeremy as he officially set foot in his 50th state right here in Icy Strait Point, Alaska. This milestone is unforgettable, and experiencing it aboard a Disney ship, surrounded by glaciers and wildlife, makes it even more memorable.

Setting Sail from Vancouver to Alaska

Our adventure begins in the stunning city of Vancouver, British Columbia. If you’re planning a Disney Alaska cruise, we highly recommend spending a couple of extra days exploring this beautiful city. Vancouver offers incredible sights like the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, which is a must-visit. The city itself is a picturesque blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty, making it the perfect starting point for our journey.

As we approach the Canada Place cruise ship terminal in downtown Vancouver, the majestic Disney Wonder comes into view. This ship is not only well-maintained but also gets an extra touch-up while in port, ensuring it’s in pristine condition for our voyage. Disney cruises are known for their first-class hospitality and, of course, their cost. A seven-night Alaska itinerary for a family of three in 2024 starts at just over $4,000 and can climb to closer to $10,000 for a veranda room with an outside balcony. Despite the price, having a private balcony on this cruise is worth every penny, as the scenery is simply stunning throughout the journey.

The Sail Away Party and Day at Sea

Our cruise kicks off with a sail away party on the ship’s upper decks. With cast members and iconic Disney characters on stage, it’s a joyous send-off that both kids and adults will enjoy. As we sail out of Vancouver, the views are increasingly gorgeous, offering a taste of the breathtaking scenery to come.

Day two is spent entirely at sea, giving us plenty of time to explore the ship and its numerous amenities. From character meet and greets to unforgettable dining experiences in the three rotating restaurants, there’s never a dull moment. The long summer days in Alaska mean sunsets around 10:30 PM, allowing for extended hours of daylight to take in the Pacific’s wide-open splendor.

Tracy Arm and Glacial Wonders

Day three brings us to Tracy Arm Fjord, where we witness the awe-inspiring South Sawyer Glacier. We hop on an excursion boat to get a closer view of this natural wonder. The sight of ice chunks dotting the still water is a clear indicator that a glacier is nearby. The calving process, where ice breaks off the glacier and falls into the water, is a mesmerizing spectacle. The safety measures ensure we’re at a safe distance, but the experience is no less thrilling. The tour, costing about $200 per person, is worth every penny for the chance to see such a magnificent sight up close.

Icy Strait Point and Whale Watching

Day four marks a significant milestone for me as I set foot in my 50th state at Icy Strait Point. This picturesque village offers a glimpse into Alaska’s unique charm. We board a whale-watching vessel and are treated to an abundance of marine wildlife, including humpback whales and even orcas. The nutrient-rich waters near Icy Strait make it a prime feeding ground for these majestic creatures. This tour, though not cheap, is an unforgettable experience that brings you face-to-face with the wild, untamed beauty of Alaska.

Back in Icy Strait, my son and I take a gondola ride to the top of Sky Point, offering stunning views and the chance to ride the world’s longest zip line. For those less adventurous, exploring the shops and beaches provides plenty of enjoyment. Skipping rocks into the icy waters of Round Bear Bay is a simple pleasure that my kids love.

Juneau, Alaska: Glaciers and Salmon

Day five brings us to Alaska’s capital city, Juneau. Despite the rain, we embark on a full day of sightseeing, starting with the Mendenhall Glacier. This 13-mile-long river of ice is a breathtaking sight, though it has retreated significantly over the years. The surrounding nature, including the gushing Nugget Falls, adds to the area’s allure.

Next, we visit the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery, where we learn about the life cycle of salmon and the fascinating way they live and die. The indoor learning center and rearing facility provide an educational and engaging experience for both kids and adults.

A highlight of our Juneau visit is the salmon bake, where we feast on delicious, freshly grilled salmon. The setting is perfect, nestled in the woods just outside the city, and the food is incredible. This outdoor dining experience, complete with s’mores for dessert, is a true Alaskan treat.

Ketchikan and The Deadliest Catch

Day six takes us to Ketchikan, where we board the Aleutian Ballad, a crab boat featured on the TV show “The Deadliest Catch.” This excursion provides a hands-on experience with crab fishing, offering a unique and exciting look into this challenging profession. The crew’s show-and-tell session with various sea creatures is both educational and entertaining.

Ketchikan itself is a bustling port city with a lively downtown area. We explore the historic Creek Street, a boardwalk mounted on stilts, and take in the sights and sounds of a street fair. The day’s activities wrap up with some last-minute shopping before we return to the Disney Wonder.

A Perfect Ending at Sea

Our final day at sea is blessed with perfect weather, allowing us to fully appreciate the inner passage’s stunning scenery. The sunny, warm day provides a chance for kids to enjoy the ship’s pool and waterslide. As we meander through the picturesque landscape, we reflect on the incredible journey we’ve had.

Conclusion: Alaska is a Journey to Remember

This Disney Alaska cruise has been an unforgettable experience, filled with breathtaking sights, wildlife encounters, and cherished memories. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time cruiser, an Alaska cruise should be on your bucket list. The combination of Disney’s magical touch and Alaska’s natural beauty creates a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that you and your family will treasure forever.

As we dock back in Vancouver, it’s time to say goodbye to the Disney Wonder and the incredible journey we’ve had.
