Bath, UK: The Secret is Getting Out

We’re getting out of London for a few days, and the destination is Bath—also known as Bath Spa. This charming city, nestled in the picturesque countryside of Somerset, promises a refreshing change of pace from the bustling capital. If you’re familiar with us, you know that staying in one city for an entire trip isn’t our style. So, on our recent trip to London, we decided to venture out and explore Bath, a city steeped in history and full of unique experiences.

Getting There: The Journey Begins

Getting to Bath from London is a breeze. For about £40 per person, we hopped on a train for a leisurely hour-and-a-half ride straight west. The journey itself is a treat, offering glimpses of the beautiful English countryside. Upon arriving, we contemplated taking a taxi to our hotel but quickly realized that Bath’s compact size makes it incredibly walkable. Most hotels are within a short distance from the train station, making it easy to get around without much hassle. The only downside can be overtourism here. With the popularity of the series Bridgerton, this city used as a main filming location has become a must visit for the show’s fans. So be mindful of that if you visit.

The Royal Crescent and The Circus: Walking through History on TV

Bridgerton fans, this is your spot! One of the first landmarks we visited was the Royal Crescent. This iconic semi-circular row of Georgian townhouses is a marvel of 18th-century architecture. It’s fascinating to think that people actually live in these historic buildings, with some even part of a luxurious hotel. The Royal Crescent is not just a visual treat but also a gateway to understanding the city’s rich history. Just a stone’s throw away is The Circus, another stunning example of Georgian architecture. Unlike the Royal Crescent, The Circus forms a complete circle, making it a unique and must-see attraction.

Natural Beauty: Bath Botanical Gardens

After soaking in the architectural beauty, we headed to the Bath Botanical Gardens. One of the nicest gardens you’ll ever visit, it’s a haven of tranquility with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and meandering walking paths. The Shakespeare Monument is a highlight, adding a touch of literary charm to the experience. Whether you’re a nature lover or simply looking for a peaceful place to relax, the gardens offer a delightful escape.

The Heart of Bath: Bath Abbey and The Roman Baths

No visit to Bath is complete without stopping by Bath Abbey. While not as grand as Westminster Abbey, it’s a beautiful gothic church with a rich history.

But the real star attraction is right next door: the Roman Baths. This ancient site, built around the city’s natural hot springs, is a fascinating glimpse into Roman history and architecture. As the only hot spring in the UK, the Roman Baths were a center of relaxation and healing in ancient times. Today, you can tour the remains and even see the original Roman stones. There are a number of artifacts from Aquae Sulis(Original Roman name) and modern interactive features to boot. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Bath, offering a unique blend of history and culture.

Modern Comforts: Thermae Bath Spa

For those looking to experience the hot springs firsthand, the nearby Thermae Bath Spa offers a modern twist on the ancient bathing tradition. While cameras aren’t allowed, the experience is unforgettable. You can relax in the warm mineral-rich waters, enjoy a rooftop Jacuzzi with stunning views of the city, and indulge in various spa treatments. It’s the perfect way to unwind and soak in the healing properties of Bath’s famous waters. No cameras are allowed inside. So it becomes a more private, intimate environment in many ways. Well, except for the rooftop, where you will likely see a number of fellow spa-goers.

A Different Vibe: The Charm of Bath

Bath offers a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of London. The city oozes charm, from the handwritten closure notes on shop doors to the quaint streets lined with independent shops and cozy cafes. Our hotel, The Yard, perfectly embodied this charm. This old, classic hotel offered a unique morning surprise—a breakfast hamper filled with pastries, fruit, and juice, delivered right to our door. It was one of the reasons we chose to stay there, and it did not disappoint.

Exploring More of Bath: Jane Austen Centre and Pulteney Bridge

Walking through Bath is like stepping back in time. The Georgian architecture is a feast for the eyes, with each building telling a story of its own. The city is also home to the Jane Austen Centre, where fans of the beloved author can learn more about her life and work.

Pulteney Bridge, another architectural marvel, offers stunning views of the River Avon and is a great spot for a leisurely stroll. It is one of the most photographed examples of Georgian architecture in the city and one of only four bridges in the world to have shops across its full span on both sides, Pulteney Bridge was designed in 1769 by Robert Adam. There are also small shops, but be mindful of the tiny road. It was also where some of Les Miserables was filmed.

We also planned to hike up to the top of the hill on the edge of town for a panoramic view, but the weather had other plans. The fog rolled in, shrouding the city in a mystical haze, but it only added to Bath’s enchanting atmosphere.

A Touch of Culture: The Royal Theatre

Located in the heart of the city, The Royal Theatre is a cultural hub that hosts various performances. We were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Brian Cox, also known as Logan Roy from “Succession,” on the opening night of his new play. While Bath might not be known for its wild nightlife, it offers a rich cultural experience, perfect for those who enjoy theater and the arts.

Bath is not a city for wild parties. The nightlife here is more subdued, with quiet streets and cozy pubs. It’s a place to relax, enjoy good food, and soak in the beauty of your surroundings. If you’re looking for a lively night out, you might want to head back to London. But if you came to Bath for charm and beauty, you’ll find plenty of it here.
