Copenhagen: The Coolest City in Scandinavia!

Hey there! Today, we’re setting sail for the land of hygge, bicycles, and colorful houses – none other than the delightful city of Copenhagen! Now we’ve been multiple times and this is one of our favorite cities in the whole world. So grab your woolly scarf and your sense of adventure, because we’re about to embark on a journey through the charming streets and quirky corners of Denmark’s capital city.

What to know to Start:

First Impressions: Hygge and Happiness As soon as you step off the plane and into the crisp Danish air, you’ll feel a sense of warmth and welcome that’s quintessentially Copenhagen. The concept of hygge – that cozy feeling of contentment and conviviality – is woven into the very fabric of this city, from its candlelit cafes to its bustling markets. So snuggle up, sip on some hot cocoa, and get ready to embrace the Danish art of happiness!

Nyhavn: Postcard-Perfect Perfection Our first stop? The postcard-perfect harbor of Nyhavn, where colorful houses line the waterfront like something out of a fairytale. Take a leisurely stroll along the cobblestone streets, soak up the vibrant atmosphere, and be sure to snap a selfie with the iconic row of sailboats bobbing in the background. Pro tip: Grab a seat at one of the cozy cafes and indulge in a plate of traditional Danish smørrebrød – open-faced sandwiches piled high with delicious toppings!

Bikes, Bikes Everywhere! One thing you’ll notice right away in Copenhagen? Bicycles. Lots and lots of bicycles. In fact, this city is a cyclist’s paradise, with dedicated bike lanes crisscrossing the streets and a bike culture that’s second to none. So why not hop on two wheels and pedal your way around town like a true local? Just be sure to watch out for those speedy Danish cyclists – they mean business!

The Little Mermaid: A Tale of Two Tails No visit to Copenhagen would be complete without paying homage to its most famous resident – the Little Mermaid statue. Perched on a rock by the water’s edge, this iconic symbol of the city draws tourists from far and wide, eager to catch a glimpse of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved heroine. But beware – she may be small, but she’s mighty popular, so be prepared to jostle for the perfect photo op!

Tivoli Gardens: Where Magic Happens Ready to unleash your inner child? Then it’s time to head to Tivoli Gardens, the world’s second-oldest amusement park and a true Copenhagen institution. From thrilling rides and enchanting gardens to lively concerts and colorful parades, Tivoli has something for everyone. So grab a cotton candy, take a spin on the carousel, and let the magic of Tivoli sweep you off your feet!

The Church of Our Savior (Vor Frelsers Kirke) This church in Copenhagen is renowned for its distinctive spiral spire, which is adorned with a stunning external staircase that wraps around it. Here are some notable features that make it special. The most distinctive feature of the Church of Our Savior is its external spiral staircase that winds around the spire. This unique design allows visitors to climb to the top of the spire and offers panoramic views of Copenhagen. Now, if you have a fear of heights, like Sean, this can be a tough climb. Jeremy did it a couple years later with ease. Both witnessed the amazing views of the Danish Capital. The church itself is a baroque-style building, designed by the architect Lambert van Haven and completed in 1695.

Freetown Christiania: A Bohemian Wonderland Last but not least, why not venture off the beaten path and explore the eclectic enclave of Freetown Christiania? This self-proclaimed “anarchist commune” is a fascinating mix of art, activism, and alternative living, with colorful murals, quirky cafes, and a laid-back vibe that’s unlike anything else in Copenhagen. Just remember to respect the community’s rules and traditions as you wander through this unique slice of Danish life.
