Hey there, fellow travelers! If you’re gearing up for a whirlwind tour of Japan, buckle up because we’re diving headfirst into the buzzing metropolises of Tokyo, Osaka, and the cultural gem that is Kyoto. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride of temples, technology, and tantalizing food!
Tokyo: Where Tradition Meets the Future
First stop: Tokyo, the city that never sleeps (literally, because you’ll find bars open until the wee hours). Picture neon lights, bustling streets, and a skyline that looks like it’s straight out of a sci-fi flick. Shibuya Crossing is our playground—imagine hundreds of people crossing at once, like synchronized chaos. Pro tip: grab a spot at the Starbucks overlooking the crossing for the best view and Instagram-worthy snaps!
Pre-covid, we explored the Shinjuku district and hit a spot that oozes random Japanese underground culture: The Robot Restaurant. The place cannot truly be explained unless it was visited. This is a place oft-visited by celebrities as well. Just a few seats from us on our visit, was John Legend and his wife, Chrissy Teigen Visit Japan
Now, let’s talk food. Ramen, sushi, tempura—Tokyo has it all. Don’t miss out on a visit to Tsukiji Fish Market (or Toyosu Market, since Tsukiji moved), where you can devour the freshest sushi of your life at 5 AM like a true Tokyoite.
For a dose of tradition, head to Asakusa and visit Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple. Get your fortune told, pick up some souvenirs, and don’t forget to snap a selfie with the iconic Thunder Gate (Kaminarimon).
Most importantly, Tsukiji Fish Market is a must stop. If you truly want fresh off the boat sushi. We had all the sushi we could stomach while visiting this legendary location. Stay and watch the fish auction as well. This is a seafood lovers’ haven. Tsukiji Fish Market
Riding the Rail
Riding the bullet train in Japan is a breathtaking experience that seamlessly blends speed and comfort. Zooming past picturesque landscapes at speeds of up to 320 km/h, it offers a glimpse into Japan’s efficient transport system and its dedication to punctuality. Whether traveling for leisure or business, the Shinkansen promises a journey that is both swift and memorable. To save money, we recommend getting a pass for your visit so you can use the train to navigate through the country with ease Japan Rail Pass
Osaka: Eat, Drink, and Be Merry
Next up: Osaka, the food capital of Japan. Seriously, this place takes eating to a whole new level. Start your culinary adventure at Dotonbori, where every street corner offers a new temptation—takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), and the famous melon pan (sweet bread).
After you’ve eaten your way through Osaka (or at least tried to), head to Osaka Castle. It’s like stepping back in time to feudal Japan, except with elevators and an awesome view from the top.
Feeling adventurous? Universal Studios Japan is just a short train ride away. Whether you’re into Harry Potter or screaming your lungs out on rollercoasters, USJ has something for everyone.
Now, when we were in Osaka, we were witness to one of our favorite travel days ever. We attended the Grand Sumo Tournament. This was the single greatest part of our trip to Japan and truly a local experience. If you plan a trip to Japan and the schedule lines up, we cannot recommend this enough.
Kyoto: Tranquility and Tradition
Last but certainly not least, Kyoto awaits with its serene temples, stunning gardens, and picturesque bamboo forests. Start your day at Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion—it’s as breathtaking as it looks in photos, I promise.
For a taste of old Japan, wander through the streets of Gion, Kyoto’s famous geisha district. You might even catch a glimpse of a geisha gracefully gliding by.
Arashiyama is another must-visit—think towering bamboo groves and a peaceful river perfect for a boat ride.
Visiting the Bamboo Forest in the Arashiyama district, is an ethereal experience that transports you into a serene realm of natural beauty and cultural wonder. This enchanting grove is renowned for its towering bamboo stalks that create a mesmerizing canopy overhead, filtering the sunlight into gentle, dappled patterns on the forest floor. As you wander along the winding paths, the rustling of the bamboo leaves in the breeze creates a soothing symphony, echoing ancient whispers of tranquility.
And don’t forget Fushimi Inari Taisha, the shrine with thousands of red torii gates leading up the mountain—it’s like walking through a mystical tunnel. This will be packed with tourists, but the walk is a special experience. If you’ve had any friends go to Kyoto, this is the spot that fills their social media feed. When you think old Japan, this is one of the first things that pops into your head.
